Buttercup is a minor character in Mia and Me.
Appearance[]
Buttercup is a large turtle-like creature, big enough to carry Polytheus on his back, as well as several ceramic pots containing whatever he needs for his business trips. Like turtles, Buttercup can get into his shell whenever he feels upset, threatened or unwilling to obey. His snout is long and pointy, sclerae are yellow and have black pupils, his scaly skin is a bluish shade of green, whereas his shell is a more yellowish green, adorned with large spiral shapes, and the edges of his shell are yellow. He has two ear-like appendages on the top of his shell and his tail splits in four near the end.
Character[]
Buttercup is a friendly, curious and innocent turtle. He's Polytheus' pet, and also mean of transportation, carrying him wherever he needs to travel. He can become quite voracious when hungry, and is very susceptible to insults, preferring to run away in sadness rather than getting angry and fighting back.
Trivia[]
- Polytheus and Mia refer to him as both "turtle" and "tortoise" as if they were synonyms, though that's not always correct. [1]
Controversy[]
During his appearance on season 1, Buttercup was referred to as a male creature, by Polytheus himself[2]. No pronouns were used to refer to Buttercup during their short participation in the second season, but when using them on the third season, Buttercup suddenly became female, with not only Polytheus treating her as such, but also Mo and Mia on several occasions[3].
It's unknown why this character suffered such an odd change all of sudden, and there's a number of possible reasons for this mistake (the show creator/director forgot, there was a major miscommunication between voice actors, directors and writers, etc.).
